Apple narrows down LED choice for iPad 3 screen

Apple's choice for iPad 3 display technology may have narrowed down, a follow-up rumor claimed Monday. Having had the choice between either a single LED backlight with two chips or two entirely separate LED lights, it's now deemed "likely" by Digitimes sources to pick the two-light option. Backlight designers have reportedly solved the battery life and heat issues from having the second light bar inside.

The extra backlighting would be necessary because of the display. Multiple rumors have had the iPad 3 carrying a 2048x1536 screen. With four times the pixel density of the current model, the tablet would need a stronger backlight to preserve and possibly improve the brightness with much smaller 'windows' for the light to pass through.

Early production of the displays themselves could start as soon as this month, based on past claims, with full production of the tablets themselves starting in December. A launch would come some time in early 2012 in this view of Apple's roadmap, although it might not necessarily be until early spring if Apple's new historical pattern is an indicator.

Apple won't be the only company facing such a challenge. A 2560x1600 Samsung display, also due in early 2012, is likely to find its way into a future Galaxy Tab and could face steeper challenges because of the higher resolution.
