HP unveils trio of 3D-aware devices and PCs

HP started off the week with a push into 3D in areas it doesn't normally touch. Its media hub, the Wireless TV Connect, now has a new model that has the still-rare ability to stream 3D video from a PC to a TV. It's now much smaller but can still take the footage directly from a PC's HDMI adapter, up to 1080p with 7.1-channel surround, over a WHDI stream with "virtually no latency" to its own wired HDMI connection.

The new Wireless TV connect is due to show in December and, at $180, is priced at or above the Apple TV, Boxee Box, and other dedicated media hubs.

HP's TouchSmart all-in-one desktops are also getting the 3D treatment. The TouchSpmart 620 3D Edition produces glasses-based 3D from its 23-inch display and is intended as much for gaming, through TriDef 3D software that outs games into 3D, as it is movies from the built-in Blu-ray drive. To help drive the extra visual dimension and movies, the PC has a dedicated 1GB Radeon HD 6670A graphics core and Beats Audio processing.

A base configuration will ship with a 3.1GHz Core i5, 8GB of RAM, a 1.5TB hard drive, and a stereoscopic 3D camera to provide video chat or recording in 3D when the software supports it. The PC will be available online for $1,600 on November 15, although HP is unusually discounting its own system even before launch and will immediately drop it by $300 with an instant rebate.

HP's dedicated displays have also been given the 3D treatment. The 23-inch 2311gt uses passive, FPR (Film Patterned Retarder) output to let users see 3D with much cheaper and lighter glasses, two pairs of which are in the box. The screen ships with CyberLink's PowerDVD Premium and DDD's TriDef 3D to give 3D movies and gaming to Windows users that don't already have the software support. As a 2D display, it normally outputs at 1080p with a 5ms pixel response time and a 1,000:1 static contrast ratio.

The 2311gt arrives first among all the introductions, shipping November 8 for $300.
