ATT plans LTE-Advanced 4G speed ugprade

AT&T Labs chief Krish Prabhu in a presentation at the LTE North America conference on Tuesday said the carrier would be in step with rivals and upgrade to LTE-Advanced. The commentary didn't give a narrower timeline than 2013 but was the first public commitment to a schedule. Its timeline will have the upgrades start roughly as AT&T's standard LTE network is completed.

The upgrade comes just weeks after Sprint's revelation of a similar upgrade in the first half of the same year. Verizon hasn't mentioned LTE-Advanced, although as the first national carrier with LTE, it's likely to follow suit.

At its peak, LTE-Advanced can run as quickly as 1Gbps, or about nine to ten times faster than LTE at its peak. The speed is enough to stream uncompressed HD and 3D video and, at its best, outpaces the best landline connections. It also provides better coverage on average and provides considerably more headroom for carriers, letting them lower their costs. [via FierceWireless]
