Mixel is for creative types, allows for collages

A new iPad app lets users create digital collages from a variety of sources including personal photo collections, Facebook photos, Bing search images and more. Called Mixel (free, App Store), it's also unique among similar apps as it shares all creations with the Mixel community to tear apart and do with what they will. Created by Dogpatch Labs, the app is meant for creative types who don't need to be sitting at a dedicated desk or studio to indulge in their passion, said founder Khoi Vinh.

The app is said to be simple to use, with options to crop and cut out images before adding them to a canvas. Final creations can then be shared over Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr. These links show only the finished Mixel and allow for following friends' creations. The most popular ones also pop up in the Popular tab, as gauged by Likes and Loves.

As there are no privacy controls in Mixel, the app warns users to be mindful of any personal photos they upload.

The makers will now work on adding Flickr, Tumblr, and Pinterest as image sources to the apps, along with bringing privacy controls for sharing Mixels with defined groups. A companion iPhone app is in the works as well, which will allow browsing Mixels rather than creating them, leaving feedback, and saving images for later. [via TechCrunch]
