Subscriber base actually larger than C Spire
Regional carrier Claro Puerto Rico has launched the iPhone 4S. The carrier is, unusually, offering a 16GB 4S for as little as $100 under a two-year contract. 32GB costs $200, while 64GB is $300. Plans cost between $65 and $85 a month, offering data between 250MB and an unlimited amount. In all cases voice and texts are unlimited.
Contract-free plans are identical, but the cost of the phones themselves increases dramatically. A 16GB model is $670, while 32 and 64GB phones are $770 and $870, respectively. Claro says, however, that 32 and 64GB options are only "coming soon," on-contract or not. An 8GB iPhone 4 can meanwhile had for $50 with a contract, or $570 contract-free.
Claro is now the fifth US carrier with the iPhone, following AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and C Spire. The biggest gap so far is T-Mobile, which at one point had been rumored as getting the 4S.
