15-inch ultralight MacBook slated for March
The rumored very thin 15-inch MacBook may already have seen some of its earliest part shipments. A rumor emerging from the parts chain told Digitimes that unnamed components were already being sent to Apple. Their nature wasn't known, although test runs of the LCD had purportedly taken place in the past.
Unlike before, the tipsters weren't willing to commit to the system being either a larger MacBook Air or a slimmer MacBook Pro. Based on the roadmap that had emerged so far, they expected that volume shipments of the completed systems would start in March for a release sometime during the spring.
While the rumor is unconfirmed, Apple has just passed the third anniversary of the existing unibody MacBook Pro design and may be eager to freshen the design, especially in the light of the current MacBook Air. It might also be keen to take advantage of changes looming with Ivy Bridge processors.
Competitors wouldn't be staying still, if accurate. ASUS reportedly has a 15-inch Zenbook enroute, while Acer may have a larger take on the Aspire S3 due in the spring "at the earliest."
