BlackBerry London 'superphone' may get Porsche Design cues

BlackBerry London possibly seen live

RIM's first BBX phone may have been spotted in an as-yet unverified leak. The phone seen by The Verge, picking up a previously only hinted at codename, would take its visual cues from the angular, metal-clad Porsche Design P'9981. The design would reportedly be thinner than an iPhone 4S and as thin as the Galaxy S II.

Inside, it would carry a much faster 1.5GHz, dual-core TI OMAP processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. An eight-megapixel rear camera and a front two megapixel camera would join it, putting it close in many respects to the higher-specification HTC and Samsung phones. BBX itself may have received a palette swap but would mostly resemble an optimized version of the PlayBook's interface.

The phone in question is a mockup and is intended to reflect the physical design more than the software. A possibility exists that the phone, if real, could be a concept and not necessarily the finished product.

Two lower-cost phones, including a very thin sequel to the Torch 9810 QWERTY slider, are also supposedly being shown.

Should it be accurate and not just a special model, the London would represent a major break in the design of RIM's phones, abandoning the soft, black shapes that started appearing with the original Pearl in 2006. Such a big break may be important for RIM, which is trying to recoup large losses in share after the company's phone designs lagged in performance and OS features.

The phone may be too late, however. RIM is supposedly targeting a June launch, which if true could see the phone arriving after quad-core phones like the HTC Edge are already on the market. It could mark a repeat of the BlackBerry 7 launch, where RIM gets competent processors but lacks the high-end devices that attract a key part of the audience.
