Leak sheds light on two upcoming updates

Nokia is reportedly readying two significant updates to its Symbian operating system, enabling handsets to take advantage of the latest hardware features. Screenshots posted on the Spanish-language site SymbianLatino suggest the releases will follow the company's tradition of using female names as monickers, with the first update labeled Carla and the next version referred to as Donna.

Carla is claimed to bring an updated browser, Dolby virtual surround sound and new widgets. The release is also expected to enable manufacturers to integrate near-field communication (NFC) equipment for mobile payments and other features.

Full details surrounding the Donna update remain unclear, though the early report suggests it will be limited to dual-core devices. Donna is also expected to be the final update for the Symbian platform, as Nokia continues its plans to engage the Windows Phone OS.

Carla is said to be released for all current S^3 devices and newer models by late 2012 or early 2013, though the Donna launch time-frame remains unclear. [via My Nokia Blog]
