Tumblr launches anti-SOPA campaign with calls
Tumblr has joined the fight against the SOPA bill that would give the US the right to close the domains of any site that is thought to illegally host file sharing. The company announced it generated 87,834 phone calls to US Congressional representatives in an concentrated attempt to prevent the bill from becoming law. The Stop Online Piracy Act is before the House Judiciary Committee.
The hearing was on Wednesday, and members will now propose and debate amendments to it and present them in a few weeks' time since a specific date hasn't yet been set.
"I think it's way too extreme, it infringes on too many areas that our leadership will know is simply too dangerous to do in its current form," Representative Darrell Isa told Tumblr regarding the bill.
Tumblr was able to automatically connect callers with their respective representatives on just 30 minutes notice thanks to friends at the Mobile Commons and their platform.
