iShred snowboard gives working iPad on the ride

Signal Snowboards this week crafted one of the more unusual tributes to the late Steve Jobs through a custom snowboard. The iShred has a fully usable iPad 2 built into the front of the board with a custom aluminum base and plastic on top to replicate Apple's design. It has a light-up Signal logo on the base, much like a MacBook, and a built-in battery for the light.

Despite using the unusual choice of material for the bottom surface, it rides very quickly on the snow, if being very slow to turn and feeling like a "lead weight" from its heft. The iPad is sheltered from the elements and has no problem surviving the ride, even after jumps and rail grinds.

The board was created as part of a tradition at Signal known as Every Third Thursday. Once a month, the company is encouraged to make a one-off snowboard that uses uncommon materials. The practice is intended to help the team think creatively, dovetailing with what the team itself saw come from Apple during Jobs' tenure. [via SlashGear]

    What would Steve think?

I think he would have found this stupid. Steve was always most interested in making something that functions well on top of being stylish. This is all style over substance, putting an iPad in a snowboard to serve no useful purpose whatsoever.

    Patent?

Great idea, especially the lighted bottom. Imagine being able to watch videos with your friends on the ipad while you're riding the chair lift?! I hope these guys patented this before their immediate public disclosure.
