iPhone 4S passes all but iPhone 4 on Flickr list
Flickr's Camera Finder has already put the iPhone 4S as the second-most popular camera phone. In the five weeks since its arrival, Apple's phone has passed the only Android phone in the top five, the HTC Evo 4G, as well as the iPhone 3G and 3GS. The only device in front is the iPhone 4, whose 16-month lead kept it safe from an immediate challenge.
The iPhone 4S isn't yet large enough to register in the top five for all camera types, where the iPhone 4 is already the most popular camera.
The accuracy of Flickr's charts has always been somewhat uncertain, since not every phone reports its identity properly. Certain camera apps, such as Instagram, can mask metadata that would otherwise come from the phone. Apple's real share could be higher or lower depending on how many iOS and Android devices are going underreported.
Having once considered the camera almost incidental, Apple has been increasing the importance of its camera to where it now considers this a key feature of any new iPhone. The iPhone 4S uses a back-illuminated, CMOS Sony sensor that's strong in low light and color-accurate. It's also ideal for macros through a wider f2.4 aperture and a five-piece lens element that improves sharpness and helps cut back on fringe distortion.
Apple also has some software advantages, such as a precise tap-to-focus system and new abilities such as auto-exposure locking and face detection. [via MacRumors]
