Boxee Box adds SlingPlayer remote TV streaming

The Boxee Box got an unusual feature addition Tuesday after the Boxee team added a SlingPlayer app. Its media hub can now stream and remotely control devices hooked up to a Slingbox Pro-HD or Solo, such as a cable DVR or even another networked media hub. It carries Sling's latest program guide but should otherwise be familiar to those who've used one of the larger-screened SlingPlayer apps.

The reason for giving a fixed-in-place device a SlingPlayer app wasn't made clear, although Boxee saw it as appealing within the same building. It may serve as an alternative to getting another set-top box in the same home or serve as a way to get home TV for those who can regularly watch on a TV somewhere else, such as at a work lounge or a cottage.

No pricing was given for the Boxee version of the app, which might be one of the few free editions. Boxee Boxes should have the option of SlingPlayer in the apps section today. The device itself costs $180, or as much as a Slingbox Solo.
