Facebook iPhone app may clue into HTC Buffy
The Facebook iOS app may be a clue as to the direction of the official Facebook phone. A rumor on Thursday claimed to SAI that it resembles mockups of Facebook's plans, at least early on. The hidden, slide-out menu "was part of the initial design" for the HTC-made phone, nicknamed the Buffy.
The social network's aim was reportedly to follow a Twitter-like approach of unifying the interfaces of all mobile software, whether it's individual apps or the entire Android-based custom OS.
Although still unconfirmed by Facebook and not due to show until roughly 2013 if accurate, the Buffy is seen as Facebook's experiment with having Facebook integrated into a phone at the deepest levels with local HTML5 versions of web apps. The project carries the risk of alienating partners like Apple and Microsoft, however, as it would see Facebook try to compete against their apps and integration efforts. Google, which has set itself up as Facebook's enemy in social networking, may also resent seeing Android used against it.
