Amazon Kindle Fire gets quiet $123 sale price

Limited time offer may be price matched

Certain local Target and Walmart stores have at least temporarily been selling the Amazon Kindle Fire for $123.38. Images have surfaced showing the Fire, as a limited time special in a Trumbull, Connecticut Target store for 35 percent off the normal selling price of $199. Photos of Walmart matching that price have also appeared on the web.

It's uncertain whether potential buyers can still get in on the deal or get other retailers to price match.

Even at the going price of $199, Amazon is losing money on every sale. Recent estimates of the hardware put the cost of the eReader/tablet at $202. Since Amazon is not making money on the device itself, it is either trying to buy market share against the iPad and Barnes & Noble Nook, or is hopeful that it can recoup its losses on the annual $79 fee that it charges its customers for subscribing to its Prime streaming and content borrowing service.
