Spotify may spread everywhere through API
Spotify's special event on Wednesday may related to third-party app support. Inside updates relayed to AllThingsD revealed that Spotify had been talking with developers about making its music library available to any app as long as it's accessed through a $10 monthly Spotify Premium account. The streaming audio is already available through third-party devices like Sonos boxes, but implementations are usually tied to special hardware deals.
The company has so far been shy on details and would only say it was going in a "new direction." That might be interpreted as enabling third-party app support, since it would turn Spotify into a content and delivery warehouse for any app developer who wants streaming music.
Little else is known to be on the possible slate. An iPad app or a major new content deal has been mentioned, but only in speculation.
The company is in a fierce competition to stay ahead of others in the streaming music market. Although well out in front at 2.5 million paid users, it's under pressure to convert more of its free users to paid and to get any advantage it can over MOG or Rdio, both of whom now have a blend of paid and free access.
