iPhone 5 and more iPad 3 show in iOS 5.1 beta

More discoveries in the iOS 5.1 beta have found Apple's first reference to the 2012 iPhone and to more 2012 iPad developments. Filippo Bigarella has shown a reference to an "iPhone 5,1" in the beta code. As with past models, the next iPhone is being considered a major revision rather than a minor upgrade.

Also mentioned was "iPad 3,3." While iPad 3,2 was already known, it points to Apple possibly having the same three-model iteration as it does now, where one core Wi-Fi version exists along with two cellular editions. With the iPhone 4S now dual-mode, it's possible the split won't be between EVDO and HSPA but instead between 3G and 4G.

Presences in code can still leave several months or more before releases, and occasionally don't lead to products at all. With the iPhone already showing up, though, it's more likely that Apple is aiming to bring the 2012 iPhone release back towards the summer rather than repeat the move to a fall update.

    Dummies

    Minor upgrade? Are you part of the Apple bashing crowd? You show that you know nothing about the intricacies of technology. The external form of the iPhone approaches perfection while the insides will alway grow by leaps with no bounds. Must I stop ready this rag in the same way I have locked out CNBC, and MadMoney and Samsung out of my life.? Dummies, all. It is so easier now to not listen to them.

    Sarcasm on.

    You mean Apple might introduce a new iPad next year? That's news to me!

    Sarcasm Off.

    Just because there are codes in the OS for new models doesn't mean that Apple has new models just waiting to be released. All it means is that Apple thinks it might be possible that they might introduce a new iPad or iPhone in the upcoming year, and that the OS simply has the hooks embedded in it for a new model.

    Now if the secret code included something like this:

    <incredible_sex>
    <iphone5,1/>
    <iphone5,2/>
    </incredible_sex>

    You'd not only have a news story, but I would be sorry that I bought an iPhone this year and can't upgrade for another two years.
