Dijit remote control app coming to iPad

updated 11:25 pm EST, Thu December 1, 2011

Includes TV guide, Netflix support

Working in tandem with Griffin Technology's Beacon bluetooth-to-infrared device, Dijit is a remote-control app that uses an iPhone or Android smartphone as a remote control that is compatible with some 200,000 home electronics devices. The team behind the iPhone version have announced that a native iPad version is now in submission to Apple, re-designed to take advantage of the large tablet surface and more "swipe-able" touch controls.

The team have posted screenshots, ranging from showing a simple but oversized remote control to demonstrating some of the various options, including a built-in live TV program guide (for the US and Canada), along with support for Netflix and the option of sharing what a user is watching via Twitter or Facebook.

With the larger iPad area, the developers have put all the relevant controls on-screen, paying particular attention to placing some controls where thumbs might naturally hold the iPad. Unused space reveals tutorials, and the on-screen guide offers previews, images, cast information and other info. The app also works with audio systems, older equipment, home theatres and other devices. The Beacon add-on is not required for "smart" TVs and other devices that are already network or Wi-Fi aware.

A release date for the iPad version has not yet been announced. The Beacon add-on needed to connect IR-wireless devices into the system costs $70, and the iPhone or Android Dijit apps are free on either the App Store or Android Market.
