Phone features Playstation inspired gamepad

Regional carrier C Spire is now offering the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play smartphone. Its version is similar to that on Verizon and centers on a slide-out gamepad to let it play ports of older PlayStation games and newer titles. It continues to center on a four-inch, 480x854 display and a 1GHz single-core Snapdragon.

On C Spire, the gaming phone serves as a mobile hotspot, sharing 3G connections with up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices.

The device comes pre-loaded with seven game titles similar to those in other packs, including Madden NFL 11, Bruce Lee: Dragon Warrior, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, The Sims 3, Star Battalion, Crash Bandicoot, and Tetris. Additionally, Sony and C Spire will be offering purchasers an additional five games as free downloads January 15, 2012, including Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Need for Speed: Shift, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Dead Space, and FIFA 12.

C Spire has priced the Xperia Play at $50 after a $50 reward card promo. A two-year contract for voice and data is required for the lower price.
