Xamarin releases Mono for Android 4.0

Xamarin has announced that Mono for Android, its open-source version of Microsoft’s .Net framework for programming in Microsoft’s C# language, is now available for Android 4.0. It will also allow developers to code for apps that will run natively on Ice Cream Sandwich devices, as well as other Android tablets including the Amazon Kindle and the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

The Mono developer platform leverages Xamarin’s MonoTouch making the task of coding for multiple platforms significantly easier. The company promises that large chunks of code written using Mono and MonoTouch for Android can also be reused for porting Android apps to iOS. Developers will also be able to reuse libraries of code written in the .Net code.

A single-user licence for Mono for Android runs at $399, while a single Enterprise license costs $999. A free version is also available but will only run in emulation mode on a user’s computer, and not on live devices. [via CNET]
