Twitter overhauls web, TweetDeck, Android, iOS UIs

Twitter on Thursday unveiled a new redesign sweeping across its entire platform. It now has a simpler design that in many cases shows content or conversations directly in the updates themselves, eliminating the need for the pop-out section on the web. A new tab menu is consistent across the web as well as desktop and mobile apps to avoid any jarring differences for those who switch often.

Other simplifications bring a Connect section that lets users see everything that has happened with a given post, a Discover section that reflects tastes based on history and location, and an always-available button for a new post. Profile pages have been revamped and make it easier to edit for the owner.

Those on the mobile web, iPhone/iPod (App Store), and Android phones (Market) can see the effects of the redesign immediately. The iPad element of the iOS app, the desktop web, TweetDeck, and other mobile platforms will get their updates later.

Its rollout comes as the company gradually introduces more ad content as well as part of a broader effort to unify its experiences on mobile and the desktop, steps for which kicked in earlier this year with an HTML5-oriented mobile page.
