Gaming phone said to be reworked

Sony Ericsson is reportedly reworking its Xperia Play gaming handset, after the original version is believed to have achieved lackluster sales numbers earlier in the year. The second-generation model is said to be named "Xperia Play 4G," suggesting a 4G radio will be one of the primary upgrades, however further details remain unclear.

The original Xperia Play offers a slider that integrates PlayStation controls rather than a QWERTY keyboard. Other features include a single-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 512MB of RAM, though the hardware is now upstaged by many Android handsets that bring dual-core processors and higher screen resolutions.

A screenshot posted on Droid-Life suggests Sony Ericsson has already begun training employees on the Xperia Play 4G. Launch information remains unclear, though the company has teased plans to introduce new smartphones at CES in January.
