Windows 8 images leak, open-source app allowed

Microsoft will allow open-source apps in its Windows 8 Store, as long as they are licensed under the Open Source Initiative (OSI), ZDNet reported. The Standard Application License Terms, meanwhile, prohibit sharing apps. Also, the final version of the store may not get this exception, as the terms are thus far only pertinent to the pre-release version of the Windows Store.

Furthermore, as suspected, only Metro-style apps will be licensed, marketed, and downloaded from the Windows 8 store. Those that don't meet the Metro UI interface requirements can only be promoted from within the store, with links to developer sites available for download from there.

At the same time, some early screen captures of what the store will look like were made available from WinUnleaked. The source also said that the store works with a user's LiveID, and an internal Microsoft domain is no longer needed to access it.
