Players add more games, MKV support

Roku has announced that it is set to introduce a software update for its Roku 2 and Roku LT set-top boxes. Version 4.2 brings a number of significant new features, including support for mobile remote apps for iOS and Android devices. The company will offer the iPhone app sometime in the near future, followed by the Android equivalent.

Aside from the mobile apps, the software update also brings support for MKV-format movie files placed on USB drives. Other improvements have been made to MP4 video playback, Wi-Fi performance, and Bluetooth remote battery life.

The company has also enhanced 3D gaming, bringing several new titles to the Roku Channel Store for use with the Game Remote. New offerings include Downhill Bowling 2, Castle Warriors and Frisbee Forever.

The software update will be pushed automatically to all supported players over the next 48 hours, however users can manually initiate the process through the interface settings.
