Scanner directs retail shoppers back to Amex deals

American Express and eBay-owned RedLaser have partnered on a deal involving the latter's mobile apps, a report says. Under the terms of the arrangement, people using RedLaser to scan retail barcodes and find deals will be able to see how many Amex rewards points they have, and possibly buy a product for less through shopAmex, the credit card company's online store. Roughly five million products are listed there, from about 60 online vendors such as Apple and Target.

While people won't be able to buy an iPad thorough the new partnership, the shopAmex store does include a number of other potentially eligible Apple products such as iPods and accessories. Apple is in fact the focal point of the agreement, since initially only the RedLaser iPhone app will support Amex rewards. RedLaser adds, though, that it expects to release an iPad app soon.

The scheme may be reminiscent of a recent one-day promotion held by Amazon. On December 10th, retail shoppers who used the company's Price Check app could get a small discount by buying through Amazon instead.
