RIM co-CEOs holding meetings to discuss leadership shakeup?

updated 09:40 pm EST, Wed December 14, 2011

Execs expected to hold onto power

Research In Motion co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie are believed to be holding closed-door meetings to discuss potential strategies for a shakeup in the company's leadership. Many investors have come to equate the company's ongoing troubles with the unique executive structure, which is dominated by two head executives who also serve as co-chairmen of the board.

Although Lazaridis and Balsillie hold board meetings like any other corporation, however the co-chiefs are accused of making the sessions a "non-event," an unnamed source close to the company has told Wall Street Journal (sub. required).

The executives are said to be likely holding high-level meetings amid criticism over the current leadership, however many analysts expect Lazaridis and Balsillie to maintain tight control over the company's operations.

Concerns over RIM's future have steadily increased as the company has continued to lose market share in the smartphone segment and failed to deliver a competitive tablet. Executives warned of a $485 million hit due to unsold PlayBook inventory, despite slashing the price from $499 down to $199.

It remains unclear if the next BlackBerry PlayBook will help the company establish itself in the tablet market. Rumors suggest the company is working on a 10-inch model with a 720p display and LTE radio, however some analysts believe the lackluster performance of the first-generation model may have caused irreparable harm to the outlook for a second-generation tablet.

Their behind closed door meetings are to figure out how to preserve their paychecks until they can find a lucrative after-life away from RIM.
