Flipboard: iPhone port is tripling use

Flipboard credits iPhone port to 2b flips a month

Flipboard's use is set to triple in the wake of the iPhone version, the company mentioned Wednesday. The app writer told paidContent that the title reached over a million downloads in the first week and could more than triple the number of page "flips" from 650 million a month to two billion. While the smaller iPhone screen means more flips as a matter of course, it still hints that iPhone use might already be going beyond the iPad.

iPhone versions of apps typically eclipse their iPad counterparts through the nature of the device itself. Where an iPad is a secondary device that's usually bought as a luxury, cellphones are often considered essentials. Flipboard can also trade off of the existing reputation of the iPad app.

The expansion may come at a vital moment for Flipboard. Its CNN-backed rival Zite has launched its own iPhone port and could see a similar jump in use. Neither, however, has any near-term plans for an Android version given slow Android tablet sales.
