Sprint gives BlackBerry 7.1 update in surprise

RIM's hinted-at BlackBerry 7.1 update started rolling out to Sprint owners on Thursday night. Owners told CrackBerry that their Bold 9930 and Torch 9850 phones were getting the upgrade over-the-air. Among other changes, it's expected to add 3G hotspot support for those willing to pay the premium.

Some users warn that some apps might not be expecting 7.1 and weren't behaving properly, but there weren't any fundamental issues so far.

Updates could be finished for every owner who checks as soon as Friday. When other carriers push out the update isn't certain, but Sprint wasn't the first carrier to get BlackBerry 7 hardware and could see RIM go out of order based on when each network is ready.
