Android Training helps spur app-making

Google hoped to kickstart Android app development with the overnight launch of Android Training. The course effort helps teach the "best" way to accomplish a given task, including playing sound, using GPS, or minimizing battery use. Every session has both the actual instructions as well as template code to simplify the process.

More courses are coming over time, Google promised. Eventually, it would include broader programs and even whole apps as examples. All of the courses are free to use.

The expansion may help close a gap for Google. Despite having a larger share of the smartphone space in sheer units, most developers prefer iOS. Apple is credited with having easier to use developer tools and more overall support.
