iOS minor build meant to fix SIM errors

Apple's mystery updated iOS 5.0.1 build is now known to fix a problem with iPhone 4S hardware claiming the SIM card is missing or invalid. A support document shows that those reporting the issue are being asked to restore the phone to force downloading the new build. It's not apparent why Apple hasn't made the update available without having to restore the phone, although it might have wanted to avoid encouraging large follow-up downloads.

The flaw only affects some users and has never been formally explained. It stays clearly tied to use on GSM carriers, as it's not an issue on CDMA phones except for those who plan to travel abroad.

I read the title as "New iOS 5.0.1 Cures Invalid" as in someone got up out of a wheel chair and started walking :-)

    Was not my problem

Had the SO's phone into Genius bar yesterday with the INVALID SIM error. Apple tech struggled restoring the phone multiple times, re-downloading this new build to make sure he wasn't using older one accidentally. Hour and a bit later he finally tried with another SIM and that fixed it.

SIM was just a dud the whole time. Maybe some people are having the error with a good SIM but in our case it didn't matter, that SIM was broken.

I kinda wish the update wasn't released. It caused the tech to spend way to much time trying firmware fixes when a simple SIM swap would have had me out of there in 5 minutes if they had tried that first. Oh well, such is life I guess.
