Nintendo 3DS coming to Louvre as visitor guide

The Louvre museum in Paris just revealed that it will use Nintendo's 3DS portable game console to guide visitors through its collection of art. The 3DS will replace its audio guides starting in March, which are so far used only by four percent of its 8.5 million yearly visitors. The French museum will become the first to do so, and Nintendo will supply 5,000 of its consoles for the cause.

The 3DS will be programmed with themed itineraries, with a choice for children, along with hundreds of recorded commentaries in seven languages. The devices will give users their location within the museum.

The move is part of a larger plan to make the museum more appealing and in step with the times. It's also redesigned its website and is working on new smartphone and iPad apps. Paid, downloadable content will help visitors make the most of their visits. [via PhysOrg]
