Orbotix Sphero reaches first customers

Just making its last-minute deadlines, Orbotix has started shipping the first wave of Sphero toys to early pre-orders. The $130 ball we first tried in January will support both Android and iOS devices on launch. The promised inductive charging cradle will make it, as will the built-in Blox, Chromo, Draw 'N Drive, Drive, Golf, and SpheroCam apps.

The toy is the first of its kind for the mainstream and uses Bluetooth to directly control the ball with a virtual stick controlling movement. A camera inside works with the SpheroCam to either record raw video or to take photos. Users can even customize the lights on the Sphero to help with races and other multiplayer games.

When we tried it, we found it very simple, but fun. We see Drive mode getting the most use, since it's essentially a blank canvas that can be used for any kind of game you like.

Orbotix has its own development program to potentially expand the Sphero and plans to put up its developer page on Tuesday.
