Firefox 9 final launches with Lion hooks, speedy JavaScript

Type inference brings faster JavaScript


Mozilla has posted the final version of Firefox 9 for Windows, Mac and Linux machines, following five weeks of testing in the beta channel. As expected, the release brings type-inference support that is said to significantly improve JavaScript load time for complex pages, along with expanded support for HTML5 and CSS standards.

The company also worked on several features specific to Macs running Lion. Theme integration has been enhanced, while users will be able to take advantage of multiple displays and two-finger navigation gestures.

    Don't worry

    Now that Google has Chrome, they're withdrawing their funding from Mozilla, and that was Mozilla's largest source of revenue. Within the next year, expect Firefox to wither and die.

    I'm still running 6.0.2 because it's the last version that all my Add-ons work with. Firefox built its reputation on the versatility of the add-on ecosystem, and these frequent updates have totally killed that. RIP Firefox.

    So, Apple produces new operating systems that break old software (like ripping Rosetta out of Lion for no good reason) and it's the people who are to blame for not keeping up to date, or the developers for not following along.

    But if anyone else updates their software to 'make it better', it's a bad thing.
