Italian inspired design, suspending polymer band
Two Scandinavian designers who have been inspired by Italian car company Pininfarina's 1970s designs have started a San Francisco-based company to make high-strength aluminum cases for the iPhone 4 and 4S that echo the Modulo concept car. The company, Edge Design, is offering two models of cases, each with a suspending polymer band that protects the phone inside the case and preventing any antenna interference.
The Alfa case offers clean lines made out of aerospace-grade aluminum, yet its design prevents the metal from touching the iPhone thanks to a strong plastic band that is available in eight color options. The design provides shock absorption in case of a fall, and both it and the Aktiv case are covered by a 24-month warranty, with each case sporting a unique serial number.
The Aktiv case, also made from high-grade aluminum, uses a textured design to create an extra layer of protection and is aimed at outdoor users. The design features rounded corners that stick out slightly from the iPhone itself, providing extra protection from damaging drops.
Both cases sell for $99 each and are manufactured in the United States. An Alfa-style case for the iPad is planned for release in early 2012.
