Mobile devices charge while playing HD content

Onkyo has announced that it is set to introduce several new A/V receivers that are claimed to be the industry's first to support InstaPrevue and mobile high-definition link (MHL) technologies. The MHL standard, which is already utilized for a variety of tablets and smartphones, enables devices to transmit 1080p video with 7.1-channel digital audio across a dual-purpose Micro-USB port.

The technology will enable users to connect their smartphone or tablet to the receiver and play HD video content through their HDTV while simultaneously charging the device. Many mobile devices integrate HDMI output, however the USB cord must be concurrently connected to avoid draining the battery.

Devices that already integrate an MHL port include Samsung's Galaxy S II, Galaxy Nexus, Infuse 4G and Galaxy Tab; LG's Nitro HD and Optimus LTE; and HTC's Evo 3D, Amaze 4G and Sensation, among others.

InstaPrevue, which was developed by Silicon Image, provides a quick way to switch between HDMI connections. Rather than requiring users to blindly navigate through HDMI or MHL channels, the technology presents each input on a live picture-in-picture stack.

Onkyo will demonstrate the new features next month at CES. The company has yet to announce additional details surrounding the new A/V equipment. [via SlashGear]
