Sony Ericsson to begin Android 4 updates in March

Sony Ericsson just revealed it will begin updating the software on its 2011 Xperia smartphones to Android 4.0 by the end of March and into April. These will include the Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V, and Xperia ray. About a month after that, the Xperia arc, Xperia Play, Xperia neo, Xperia mini and mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active, and Live with Walkman will get the same update.

The company warns not all of the same models will get the update at the same time, with the rollout for each occurring over the course of several weeks. Users will get a notification of the update's availability and will have the choice of performing it over 3G, Wi-Fi, or through PC companion software on their computers.

The OS will retain Sony Ericsson's own Xperia-specific overlay, and combining this with Android 4 is part of the process. It's the key factor behind the delay in getting the OS versus the Galaxy Nexus, which as a stock phone could get it much faster.
