1st Samsung Android phones to support 2 SIMs
Samsung has announced two smartphones with dual-SIM capabilities. The new Galaxy Y Duos and Galaxy Y Pro Duos will be the company's first Android-based devices to support two SIMs to enable users either to consolidate their business and personal lines on one phone, or to wield multiple phone plans on one device. Many of those in Asia and Europe, the phone's main targets, often thrive on multiple plans to save money.
The Galaxy Y Duos targets young pros who are looking for an entry level dual-SIM phone. It centers on a 3.14-inch, 240x320 touchscreen and an 832MHz processor. The Galaxy Y Pro Duos also targets young professionals, but those in need of a more "business-friendly" device. It offers a QWERTY keyboard, an optical trackpad, and a 2.6-inch 240x400 display running on an as yet unspecified processor. Both phones run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), and sport three-megapixel fixed focus rear-facing cameras. The Y Duos adds a front-facing VGA camera.
The Y Pro Duos also provides users with two business oriented apps, Polaris and Find My Mobile. Polaris lets users work with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and also read these and other Office documents as well as PDF files. Samsung’s Find My Mobile service let users remotely lock the phone, as well as trace it or remotely wipe its contents if it is lost or stolen.
Both phones will begin shipping in January. Samsung initially will launch the Galaxy Y Duos in Russia and then roll it out to Europe, CIS, Latin America, Southeast and Southwest Asia, Middle East, Africa and China. Samsung is targeting fewer markets with the Galaxy Y Pro Duos. The vendor will not be bringing it to Russia, Southeast Asia, or China. Samsung hasn't set pricing for either smartphone and will likely see it vary on each network.
