Rhapsody cracks one million subscribers

Rhapsody President shaves head to commemorate 1m

The Rhapsody streaming subscription music service has just reached over one million paying subscribers. The growth also means Rhapsody president Jon Irwin kept his promise and shaved his head to commemorate the milestone. Just last year, Rhapsody was at 650,000 subscribers when it became an independent company.

The company isn't revealing how many more subscribers it has over one million, but Irwin used "blow through" to describe it. Rhapsody has been around for ten years now, and charges $10 per month for access to its music library. It has recently launched an Android app to supplement its iOS app.

Competitor Spotify, which just entered the US market earlier in 2011, has 250,000 subscribers in the US. It offers an ad-supported free version of its service, which Irwin believes isn't sustainable in the long run.

In the meantime, Rhapsody expects to continue to grow its company with new partnerships and products. [via GeekWire]
