Roku updates original boxes with 3.1, more

Following last week's update of its Roku 2 and Roku LT set-tops, Roku has now released an update for owners of the original device. Version 3.1 brings with it not only an assortment of bug fixes and performance improvements but also a number of new features. There is now support for the recently launched iPhone remote control app.

Otherwise, there is improved MP4 playback for files streamed over the web or USB-connected media. Users can now shop the Roku Deals section in the Roku Channel Store as well. Roku has addressed grid performance issue when navigating channels.

At the same time, the Amazon Instant Video channel has been updated with a new user interface. The home screen has been halved, with a list of choices listed on the left and DVD covers and other artwork on the right. Selecting sections will let users quickly scroll through content in a grid format. Searches can be started from anywhere in the menu through an options button on the remote control or the iPhone app. A new Editor's Picks section lets users get viewing ideas.

Users should have received the software update automatically by now, but can check their software settings manually if not.
