Cregle iPen for iPad packs ballpoint accuracy, cursor

Cregle iPen project gives high-precision stylus

Cregle is hoping to make one if the few if not only high-precision styluses for the iPad through the iPen. The input has an active digitizer and fine tip like professional pens that lets it draw at a precision closer to a ballpoint but with optimizations for the iPad's screen, which isn't explicitly tailored to pens. It discards palm input and, with supporting apps, will show a cursor even when not quite in contact.

Rather than rely on Bluetooth, it plugs into the Dock Connector and uses a combination of an infrared transceiver and ultrasound to identify the pen's position. The Kickstarter-funded project is one of the few to officially get the blessing of Apple's Made for iPad program even before it ships.

Initially, GhostWriter Notes, GoodNotes, My Notebook, and iWriteWords will fully support the iPen on launch. Several other apps, including well-known iPad drawing apps like ArtRage and Procreate, will support it by February.

Cregle is well past its pledge target and promises to ship the iPen soon. Pre-ordering the iPen demands at least a $79 pledge as well as $15 shipping. Volume discounts at $149 and $207 save money for those wanting to buy two or three at once. [via John Nack from Adobe]

    Wonderfull idea but...

a kludge, compared to having an inductive digitizer layer embedded on the display along the capacitive layer; like anyone having used a Wacom display/digitizer will tel you

Now that SJ is no longer head of Apple, the next iPad might carry a built in inductive layer for pressure sensitive styli, and once more Artists will fall in love with Apple.
