RunCore Falcon and Pro V 7mm due at CES

RunCore in the run-up to CES has brought out two new solid-state drives each tailored at a different side of notebooks. The Falcon line uses a newer Marvell memory controller that promises faster performance than the existing Pro V line. RunCore hasn't given performance claims for the 2.5-inch SATA3 drive, but the Pro V Max hits 559MB per second in peak read speeds and 521MB per second in writes.

Its second drive, the Pro V 7mm, is intended for ultrabooks and other thin notebooks that can take drives 2.5 inches wide but where the namesake thinness (0.28 inches) is either needed or ideal. Even with the size reduction, it can still hit respective peak reads and writes of 540MB per second and 500MB per second.

RunCore hasn't said if the drives will be available separately, but it will show both at CES in mid-January and is likely to pitch either drive to computer builders looking for SSDs to use in volume.

    Sen-Sational Drives

The potential for faster and (especially) lower-cost SSDs to extend the life of older Macs is truly exciting. For most users disk access and transfer is much more a bottleneck than is processor power. When users realize this they eagerly upgrade their experience at relatively little cost. In MacBooks, the ease with which drives are swapped is icing on the cake.
