Amazon Kindle Fire closes gap with iPad

The Amazon Kindle Fire's Internet traffic more than doubled over the Christmas weekend, Millennial Media noticed on Friday. The Android tablet's impressions on Millennial's ad network grew an average of 113 percent between December 23 and 26. Christmas Day saw a one-time 261 percent spike as people opened their presents.

Apple also saw an uptick during the holidays of about six points. Its larger existing share kept it well ahead, but the gap had closed considerably in the immediate aftermath of the holiday.

Amazon's actual Kindle Fire sales may be considerably less than first bought. The $199 price, and a deliberate focus on content rather than the traditional Android experience, may nonetheless have helped it become the leader among non-iPad tablets even with sales limited to the US. Questions have remained whether it will sustain those volumes if Apple cuts the iPad 2 price.
