Samsung may compete in TV with Japan on own turf

Samsung might try to once again take on Japanese TV builders in their home territory, rumors from Japan's Nikkei asserted Monday [sub. required]. Having backed out in 2007, the Korean company was reportedly looking to get back in for 2013. Big-name retailers Yamada Denki and Yodobashi Camera would stock the sets in this scenario.

The company hadn't confirmed the deal, which wasn't credited to a particular source.

Delving back into Japan would make sense for Samsung, which just recently bought Sony's joint TV LCD stake. It would still end up competing against Sony but would have less of a conflict of interest in possibly undermining a partner's share on its home soil.

Most TV designers have been on the decline in the past year as the market saturates. Samsung has seen a rebound, though, and could use Japan to take advantage of weaker challengers.
