Samsung intros Series 7 screens with MHL video in

Samsung continued its pre-CES unveilings with a pair of unique screens built primarily with smartphone and tablet users in mind. Both the Series 7 Smart Station and tuner-equipped Series 7 HDTV 750 Monitor have MHL (Mobile High Definition Link) support on their HDMI ports, letting either use audio, video, and even USB peripherals from a phone or tablet linked up with the right cable. At 24- and 27-inch sizes each, the two are seen as effective docking stations for some Android hardware and anything else that recognizes MHL.

Apart from cosmetic differences, the changes between the two rest in their focuses. The Smart Station can use HDMI for computers and other sources as well, but it relies primarily on a Wireless USB adapter hooked up to a notebook to get both the 1080p display and peripherals connected. It carries three USB ports, two of which are USB 3.0, as well as a 10W speaker system, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and an audio output.

The LCD itself is a higher-quality panel with a 5,000:1 static contrast ratio and a wide 178-degree viewing angle, usually a sign that it's either a mid-range PVA or high-end IPS display.

Samsung's HDTV 750 Monitor variant forgoes Wireless USB in favor of a TV tuner with picture-in-picture support. It too has three USB ports and Wi-Fi, but sheds Ethernet in exchange for DLNA media sharing on the local network. The LCD here has a 1,000:1 static contrast and a narrower 170-degree viewing angle from its budget TN-based LCD, but it gets a boost from a dynamic contrast ratio.

Both displays ship in March and will cost $549 for the Smart Station where the HDTV 750 Monitor jumps to $599.
