Tech transfers files at 560Mbps
Toshiba has announced that it is currently shipping TransferJet chips in sample quantities to electronics manufacturers. The LSI component, referred to as TC35420, is geared for smartphones, tablets and notebook computers, enabling such devices to wirelessly transfer multimedia files.
The short-range wireless technology is claimed to support maximum transfer rates of up to 560Mbps (70MBps), though devices must be located within one inch of each other to achieve optimum speeds. Toshiba suggests it has worked to extend the practical range by boosting the chip's sensitivity to -78dBm.
It is unclear if TransferJet technology will establish itself as a mainstream standard, after several years of lackluster success. The standard now competes with competing alternatives such as Wi-Fi Direct, which enables Wi-Fi devices to transfer files without the use of an intermediary hotspot or other equipment.
Toshiba is currently selling the TransferJet LSI samples for $5 per unit.
