Sprint outlines first LTE target areas

Sprint chief Dan Hesse during his stint at the Citi media and telecoms conference confirmed the first cities for the carrier's LTE rollout. Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio will all get the faster 4G. These and six other areas will be covered by mid-2012.

The provider had already said it planned to have its first smartphones in the second half of the same year.

Sprint was one of the first to claim a 4G service with its WiMAX network, but it has been pressed to upgrade as Verizon and AT&T implemented faster LTE networks and even T-Mobile's HSPA+ began outpacing its service. The switch both keeps Sprint competitive and also gives it access to the same hardware Verizon can use, including iPads and iPhones whenever Apple decides to upgrade them to 4G.
