ViaSat preps 12 Mbps satellite broadband for $50 per month

ViaSat has announced plans to offer new satellite broadband plans for residential customers in the US. The company's upcoming offering will enable subscribers sign up for 12 Mbps broadband service for $50 per month.
The new service has been made possible by the company's latest satellite, the ViaSat-1, which will enter service later this month. The satellite is said to be capable of supporting 140 Gbps in total capacity, with service coverage across the US.
The company earlier this year announced plans to offer its satellite-based broadband service for in-flight Internet access on JetBlue. The system will use the Ka band, which is claimed to support much faster connections than land-based alternatives.
The residential service is slated for availability beginning January 16, though the JetBlue capabilities will not launch until the end of the year. The company is also working on a global network for international use.
