Rumors back iPad 3 in March, add sketchy 'iPad 4' in October

iPad 3 timeframes outlined in rumor

Claims of the iPad 3 shipping in March were braced on Friday by a rumor that included uncertain claims of a second 2012 follow-up. Apple's tablet would arrive in two months with its rumored 2048x1536 display, Digitimes' anonymous sources said. They also echoed beliefs that Apple would cut the iPad 2 down to $399 to squeeze out other companies who had discounted their own tablets, though in their case due to poor sales.

More controversially, the same tips from part suppliers had Apple shipping an "iPad 4," their informal nickname for it, in October. The "much upgraded" version would purportedly keep the same 9.7-inch screen size, but not much else was mentioned. The sequel would be intended to counter not just a wave of Android tablets likely to show in the fall but a slew of Windows 8 tablets, some of which would be based on Intel's tablet-oriented Clover Trail platform.

The assertions are cast into doubt by Apple's tendency to keep to a once-a-year update cycle for every iOS device, but also by a lack of competition. Apple is still expected to have the majority of the tablet market going into 2012, and neither Android 4.0 nor the crop of processors will necessarily be enough of a leap forward to give Apple a reason for concern.

Similar rumors of a second, fall iPad update had emerged in 2011, but never panned out.

2 product refreshes in the same year?

Has Apple ever released back to back product updates in the same year? I'm not sure I could see a Ipad 2s and then a full blown iPad 3 in the same year......

Not buying it (ok I may buy one or the other but not this story or two new iPads in one year)

What's with these rumours of an October launch? They've already seemingly moved the iPhone to an October schedule, why would they move the iPad to one as well?

So are't these the same one who said

Fall iPad 3 and then Dec/Jan iPad 3 and now .... gee why is this stuff reported. How bad to they have to get before the "rumor" source is totally discredited?

    say what?

That's not going to happen. What a nonsense rumor. There will be 1 iPad in 2012 - the iPad3 - and it will probably show up in July or sometime thereafter.

    actually makes sense

Two in one year, not necessarily what each are. climacs, the reasoning is obvious.

climacs, if the 'real' iPad 3 isn't going to be ready until, say, September, why should Apple hold off on any refresh until then, esp. if they're concerned sales will slow over that 6 month period? They could release an updated iPad 2s that includes some extra useless features that people will clamor for (like Siri) to spur sales over the next 9 months, then release an iPad 3 in the fall for a big xmas push.

Of course there will be some fanboy whining if 2 came out in one year, but most people don't care. And this will get those 'waiting for the next rev to buy' people buying (because if they're stupid enough to be waiting just because one might be released, they'll be happy that one is. And if they're really stupid and go "hey, this isn't much of an update, I'm going to wait" that will be the thing they'd say probably if the 'real' iPad 3 came out in March. So who cares.)

    oh shut up testudo

why on earth would Apple want to shoot their wad twice in one year, so to speak, when the iPad is crushing the competition?

You don't even see two iPhones in one year and there's more competition there, than there is in the tablet market. There are all sorts of other reasons why it makes no sense to launch two iPads in the same year, such as manufacturing, engineering, design and marketing.

Once again, you don't know what the h*** you're talking about.
