App transforms photo into 3D representation

Sculpteo has unveiled a cloud-based 3D printing engine. With it and an app running on an iPhone or iPad, (free, App Store), an individual can snap a photo and recreate a 3D likeness on an piece of ceramic.

After launching the app, a user takes a photo of themselves, a friend or an object using their iPhone or iPad. The app then sends the image to Sculpteo's Cloud Engine, which converts it to a 3D image. That representation can that can be used to reproduce the shape on a ceramic object such as a vase, bowl, plate, mug. It's possible to manipulate the design and change its size, dimensions, and color.

Pricing for the resulting artifact can range from $50 to $450. [via Wired]
