New designs mimic Kinect

Intel has previewed the capabilities of Windows 8-based ultrabooks, some of which take advantage of touchscreen technology and voice recognition. The chip maker suggests more than 75 ultrabook designs will arrive on the market this year, as the company's third-generation Core-series processors become available this spring.

Intel vice president Mooly Eden demonstrated a unique ultrabook prototype, known as the Nikiski, that features a transparent touchpad that extends most of the way across the space below the keyboard. The transparent surface enables users to close the notebook and still view content, such as news feeds and calendar entries, on a portion of the display.

A separate demo showed off a Kinect-like system that appeared to track the position of a user's hand and fingers as they moved in the air above the keyboard. The technology was used to play a slingshot game, though it is promoted as an alternative to traditional mouse input.

Aside from the physical input demos, the company noted that it has established a partnership with Nuance to bring speech recognition technology to all ultrabooks. Nine languages will be supported, including Mandarin.

Ultrabooks are expected to be a focal point for computer makers this week at CES, however further details surrounding the prototypes in the Intel presentation remain unclear.

Who's in charge of PC platform?

Since the birth of the PC, Microsoft was in control of the platform and Intel merely a chip supplier. Intel has never drive PC evolution ahead and have always depend on Microsoft for bringing new stuff to market.

Now with Microsoft to push more on ARM platform, Intel appeared to be desperate to find new uses for their new chips that no one care about anymore.
