Report claims CES hands-on with iPad 3 prototype

updated 01:25 pm EST, Tue January 10, 2012

External changes minimal, account hints

On the outside, changes to the iPad 3 may be minimal, suggests iLounge. Site editor Jeremy Horwitz says that yesterday he was shown an alleged prototype of the new tablet at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The hardware is described as "roughly 1mm" thicker than the iPad 2, which Horwitz adds that he's heard will cause no problems for accessories except those precisely tailored to the iPad 2's back. Buttons, switches and ports are otherwise said to be identical.

Of special interest may be the prototype's rear-facing camera, which is described as "noticeably" bigger than the one on the iPad 2, but only when two tablets are compared side-by-side. The new camera hole is circled by a silver ring, and reportedly resembles the size of the one for the iPhone 4S. This may back claims that the iPad 3 will get substantially improved front- and/or rear cameras.

Horwitz mentions, though, that the prototype "seemed to be more than half a year old." That could mean that it doesn't reflect the final design of the iPad 3, although Apple would likely have been finalizing details given the time needed for production.

Most of the changes to the iPad 3 are expected to only be noticeable in use, such as a higher-resolution screen, and a quad-core processor. The extra shell thickness may be needed to fit the new parts powering the tablet.

    Yeah right...

Apple would not bring a super secret prototype to CES for anyone to see (they are so tight on security). iLiar is more like it.

    Three possible explanations

Re: "Most of the changes to the iPad 3 are expected to only be noticeable in use, such as a higher-resolution screen..."

Unless Mr. iLounge's eyesight is extremely poor, there are three possible reasons why he didn't mention the sharpness of the screen:

    1. the prototype wasn't running, or
    2. the prototype was a fake, or
    3. the prototype doesn't really exist

Doesn't matter which of the above is true. All click-bait.

    glasses free 3d...

... and twin cams for 'large format' 3d photography & facetime 3d ? how's that for meaningful upgrade speculation...

Apple might be wise to seed a few red herrings given the pied piper tech sector competition...

No one said that Apple brought it as if they were showing it off. It just as easily could have been brought by an Apple employee.

Yes, that's why iPhone prototypes are lost in bars, because they're so tight on security.

No one said they were there in any type of official presence, nor that this person was shown the prototype as an official display.

    Wow he could tell

that it was 1 mm thicker? Amazing! VERY impressive. Maybe his senses of touch is heightened by being blind & so he didn't notice the higher res screen.

I did notice that Apple is not mentioned in the story ...

    1mm

If you sat a new device next to an old device it wouldn't be difficult to guess-timate a 1mm thickness change.

That said: I have my doubts about this report as well.
